for the out of towners- a short explanation. every year at an elementary school in NW portland, thousands of chimney swifts set up shop in a big chimney. they fly in a big crazy tornado of birds and then dart into the chimney one by one. it's awesome, and huge crowds of people show up to watch. we took eli tonight for his first time (and mine, oddly enough- even though i've lived here my whole life) and it was awesome. i'm looking forward to making it an annual ritual.

first camping trip!

well, the day after eli's birthday, we headed out to the coast for eli's first camping trip. as far as camping experiences go, it was not the most rugged. we camped at devil's lake state park, so we just had a dinky campsite in the middle of a bunch of other dinky campsites, pulled the car up, and set up our tent. it was super fun! we ate lots of delicious campfire food (including miniature cakes made inside of orange peels! jason is a genius!) and we took eli to the oregon coast aquarium. i remember my first beach trip at age 2, i wonder if eli will remember any of this one?

he spent a LOT of time pretending to drive the car. not the most outdoorsy activity, but it kept him nice and busy while we set up meals and stuff:

luckily, no fire catastrophes, though we did have to holler at him to get back more than a few times:

2 years old! Woo woo!

Okay, I can't even believe I'm still awake, but I'm not going to have time to blog tomorrow before we leave on our camping trip, so here you go, family!

From Grandma & Grandpa Carrier, a tricycle:

I know it's difficult to tell by his impassive expression, but I assure you he was mega pumped.

he fell asleep on the way to the party:

and stayed that way for awhile.

but eventually he woke up:

When we asked him what he wanted on his cake, his reply was, "Uh, a skull!" so we made him this pirate flag cake. He dug it, he even got to pick out the little pirate dudes we put on top:

Okay! That's a lot of pictures! If you click on them, it will take you to my flickr where you will find even more birthday pictures. Thanks so much for all the well-wishes, the adorable gifts, and the good company at the party. 2 years of parenthood have been... pretty insane. Eli's growing big and strong and healthy, and we are so lucky to have so many awesome people helping us out and keeping us from going crazy. Can't wait to see the Johnson family in October!

mole obsession

elijah is completely obsessed with this mole on my right shoulder. he pokes it all the time and kisses it and tries to hug it. it's really weird.

happy birthday, renee.

today was renee's birthday. we took the boys to the zoo and it was pretty cute watching them get excited about all the animals. shortly after the second picture was taken, everett attempted to gain control of the wheel, and eli freaked out. everett's response was to ROAR LIKE A LION IN ELI'S FACE. eli was understandably very upset, but i busted out laughing really hard. showing off my awesome parenting skillz at the zoo, y'all.
