for the out of towners- a short explanation. every year at an elementary school in NW portland, thousands of chimney swifts set up shop in a big chimney. they fly in a big crazy tornado of birds and then dart into the chimney one by one. it's awesome, and huge crowds of people show up to watch. we took eli tonight for his first time (and mine, oddly enough- even though i've lived here my whole life) and it was awesome. i'm looking forward to making it an annual ritual.
